The Texas Education Agency recently announced that about 36% of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds have yet to be drawn down for school year 2009-2010. In a TO THE ADMINISTRATOR ADDRESSED letter dated October 20, 2010, the TEA sent a friendly reminder to school districts and open-enrollment charter schools to draw down as soon as possible the remaining balance of ARRA funds of $1,371,697,123. The greatest amount of funds remaining to be drawn down are for IDEA-B Formula - ARRA of $503,027,331 followed by Title I, Part A- ARRA of $417,488,140.
It is critical that the funds be expended and drawn down timely by the required deadlines to prevent these funds from lapsing, meaning be returned to the federal government. It is a significant concern that such a large balance has yet to be drawn down for school year 2009-2010 became for many school districts and charter schools a lot more ARRA funds are to come for school year 2010-2011.
