We’re all problem-solvers. Every day, we juggle tasks in both our personal and professional lives, striving to quickly and effectively address challenges. As I’ve worked to create a solutions-focused culture among my colleagues and members, I’ve found the answer in the Six-Step Process. That’s why we’re bringing this powerful workshop to all 20 regions across Texas.
What Is a Solutions-Focused Culture?
One of the earliest lessons I learned in my first managerial role at Gateway Computers—yes, the company with the cow-spotted boxes back in the '90s—was this: “Don’t make your poor planning my emergency.” That message stuck with me throughout my career, shaping my approach to managing both people and processes. I didn't want to be "that guy" who created problems for others. I wanted to be the co-worker who came up with solutions.
But as I gained experience, I saw the flaw in the mindset that demands, “Don’t come to me with a problem unless you have a solution.” While this approach can seem efficient, it can also unintentionally create a culture where people hesitate to bring up issues because they feel pressure to present a ready-made solution. That delay can compound problems rather than solve them.
Bad News Early Is Good News
I work to foster a team culture based on open, honest communication. In my view, bad news early is good news—it means we can tackle the issue before it escalates. I want my team to feel comfortable bringing up problems as soon as they surface, whether they have solutions or not. This is where the Six-Step Process comes into play.
Teaching my team the Six-Step Process equips them with a powerful tool they can apply to any problem, challenge, or opportunity. If they can independently apply the process and bring me potential solutions, fantastic! But if the issue is too complex, I want them to come to me immediately so we can collaborate and work toward a solution using the same structured method.
Breaking the “Problem Stew”
One of the reasons I’m so passionate about this program is because it ties together key principles of leadership and culture that I strive to create. Often, we have a tendency to admire the problem and stew in it. Sometimes, we commiserate with co-workers. We vent. At the end we obsess and take up too much time on the issue and don't move towards a solution. The Six-Step Process breaks that habit by shifting the focus from the problem to the vision or desired outcome. It gives us a clear path from where we are to where we want to be.
What Is the Six-Step Process?
The Six-Step Process is a structured, practical approach that fosters collaboration, sparks innovation, and delivers real solutions. Whether you’re working on your own or as part of a team, this method equips you to tackle challenges efficiently and with confidence. And as more people embrace this process, its impact multiplies across your organization.
