The Social Security Fairness Act is good news for TRS retirees whose social security benefits were impacted by WEP, GPO, or both. Bookmark resources and look for updates on this topic as we learn more about implementation.

On January 5, President Biden signed the Social Security Fairness Act repealing the windfall elimination provision (WEP) and the government pension offset (GPO). The WEP reduced earned Social Security benefits of an individual who also receives a pension from a job not covered by Social Security, including many TRS retirees. The GPO reduced spousal and survivor social security benefits in families with retired public service/government workers covered by government pensions. The repeal is good news for the many TRS retirees whose social security benefits were impacted by the WEP, GPO, or both.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is evaluating how to implement the Act. More information may be found on the SSA website where you can also subscribe for updates. TRS notes on its website that TRS benefit payments are not affected by social security.
