Spotlight on Jessica Herrera, CTSBO

Jessica Herrera

Jessica Herrera, CTSBO Accountant | Mesquite ISD

How did you get your start in school business?

Shortly after I had my children, I realized that I did not want to miss out on watching them grow and achieve milestones. I then decided to begin my career in school business to allow me more time with my family and loved ones.

What do you like best about your job and where you work?

I like the fact that my work, even though it is all behind the scenes, has an impact on the children in our community. I am grateful for the love and support from my colleagues and department – they are my MISD family.

Why do you recommend TASBO to your colleagues? What programs and services do you find useful?

I recommend TASBO due to the wide variety of training and certification courses available. I like the one-on-one help you receive at the live events, as well as contact information for the presenter. It is nice to have someone you can contact when you get back to the office and run into one of those situations discussed in the course.

What is your favorite TASBO training to attend, and why?

My favorite TASBO training would be either the Annual or Summer TASBO Conferences. I love the fact that I can attend certification courses and the various session classes serve as a refresher on current material. I enjoy visiting with the vendors to see what they have to offer. TASBO conferences do a great job of providing learning and fun all in one.

What book could you read over and over again?

Goodnight Moon

Tell us a fun fact (or two!) about yourself:

I am the mother of a handsome and sweet 6-year-old boy, a beautiful and silly 4-year-old girl, and bonus mom to a beautiful kind hearted teenage 14-year-old girl. My husband, children, and I recently moved out to the country with our three dogs and chickens.

What's one thing you're excited about/looking forward to in the future?

I am really excited and looking forward to graduating with my Masters in Accounting in 2020.

What does it mean to you to be TASBO certified?

I currently have my CTSBO, and I am working towards my RTSBA certification. Being TASBO certified to me means you care and are devoted to the organization, students, and community.

Anything else you would like to include?

I come from a humble family and experienced events in my life that left a huge impact and have shaped the person I am now. I believe you can achieve anything you put your mind to. All it takes is determination.
