To exemplify great leadership in public education, TASBO documented the journey of four volunteer leaders in the video series “Profiles in Leadership.” Shay Adams, Darrell Dodds, Jennifer Land, and Michele Trongaard were all honored at the 2024 TASBO Engage Conference, where the video series debuted. This week's video focuses on Garland ISD's Chief Financial Officer Darrell Dodds, RTSBA.

Dodds began his tenure at Garland ISD at the beginning of the 2023-24 school year. Dodds has worn many hats in his career, including business manager, director of finance, director of administration, and assistant superintendent of finance and operations. He even was Interim Superintendent. He has overseen district accounting & finance, PEIMS, purchasing, maintenance, transportation, and food service. He’s even driven a school bus and called ball games.

Dodds was raised in a family of educators. His father was a superintendent. Three uncles were superintendents. His immediate family has contributed 669 years of service to education. Even though he began his career in banking, Darrell says the best decision of his life was following in his family’s footsteps.

TASBO members first elected Dodds to its board of directors in 2014 before serving as Board President in 2021. Under his leadership, TASBO expanded online training and renewed its in-person training following COVID-19 lockdowns.

“He’s one of the nicest guys I know,” said TASBO Executive Director Tracy Ginsburg. “We are honored to celebrate Darrell and three other of our leaders in this video series.”
